I didn’t shop last Friday so I had nothing to post.
We just found out that Mr. Foodie will be heading out west again in a little over a week for another six weeks. ~~sigh~~ That sent off a little internal panic button. Today is the first day of Hurricane Season and we’ve already had two named storms. Because of the mild winter last year the ocean didn’t get a chance to cool off and I think its ripe for storms this year. We are also overdue for a direct hit. Our last direct hits (from major storms) were Frances and Jeanne in 2004. Normally we get hit every 5-7 years. Even though we have a generator and friends and neighbors that can help me hook it up I still don’t want to get caught with two freezers full of food if a storm blows through here while he’s on the other side of the country so I’m making a focused effort to start eating down the meats I’ve stockpiled and continuing to use up odd stuff to make room if I find myself in a situation where I need to be selective about what I can salvage and what I can’t if I can only run the main fridge/freezer for some reason.
There’s actually a little more room than what it looks like. I need to do a little rearranging

Regular freezer will also have quite a bit more room. I need to pull meats for the week so they can thaw then rearrange.
.
I’ve used up three baggies of coffee in the past couple weeks and more nuts and beans that I keep in the door

Since I didn’t shop last week that left me some wiggle room with our budget this week and since Mr. Foodie was home I took full advantage of his back and muscles and we replenished our water supply. We like to keep 12 cases of the bottles on hand at all times and I was keeping up with it there for a while but slacked off recently so I let him do all the heavy lifting. I need to get some spare jugs of water just for the season. I like to keep them on hand to share with unprepared neighbors if I need to (happens EVERY time…you’d think Floridians would know better!) or to clean with but I can easily pick those up a few at a time.
Today’s total $142.94 (only one case of water is showing but we actually bought six)

But here’s our splurges!
I’ve been noticing for the past year or so that my taste buds are changing (again). Some things I used to like I’m not so fond of anymore and other things I either didn’t like or didn’t *think* I would like are becoming more tolerable for me. So, I’ve been considering leaning much more towards a vegetarian-type diet. I don’t think I’ll ever give up milk, cheese, eggs or fish but I could probably get by with 4-5 days worth of plant based foods. So, a few things I bought today were Edamame, canned Chickpeas, Jasmine Rice and Balsamic Vinegar (No…I have NEVER been a fan of Balsamic and neither has Mr. Foodie, but I’m going to try again…him…not so much I don’t think.)
And, since Mr. Foodie was with me we took a side trip to the other side of town and went to the health food store where we bought some…
wait for it…
wait…
TOFU!!
Not just one kind, but TWO!!
And SEAWEED!!
And MISO!!
And Flax Seeds…which I’ve bought before.
The (Wasabi flavored) seaweed is really more of a snack. Mr. Foodie tried it but I haven’t yet. I’m actually a little freaked out by it but I’ll give it a try. Someday. Soon. Maybe.
I have absolutely no idea what to do with the tofu yet, especially the Spinach Jalapeno flavor (that was totally a Mr. Foodie purchase) nor do I know what to do with the Miso but I’m constantly seeing it as an ingredient and the expiration date isn’t until 2014!!!
I’m sorry but that has to be some pretty wicked stuff to be able to hang out in a refrigerator for over two years!
Not to mention it’s PRICEY! $6.59 for that little container!
So, my recipes are going to be all over the place for the next little bit…meat heavy for the next couple of weeks until Mr. Foodie gets out of town then a little of this and a little that while he’s gone.
So, if you’ve got any awesome Tofu OR Edamame recipes in your stash, throw me a bone (or should I say stick?), will ya? I’m ready to experiment!

Chickpeas. I love them! Did you know you ca. Get a big bag of dried chickpeas for pennies? When rehydrated they are better than the canned stuff. No tinny taste.
Tofu, they say you can sub it for chicken in any recipe, though I haven’t tried it yet. You can also fry it. I had it cubes and fried. With a marinara dipping sauce at a restaurant in LA once. It was pretty darn good.
I’ve never been a fan of chickpeas. Mostly it was a texture thing but their flavor was also kind of weird to me. But, I’ve been seeing Roasted Chickpeas *everywhere* so I thought I’d give them a try that way.
As for the tofu…totally unchartered territory, lol!
I didn’t realize your hurricane season started so early. I have an idea of what you could do with that tofu…
Susan recently posted a Chili Glazed Tofu that’s been on my mind but I’m open to all suggestions at this point!
